ILLUSTRATED PRIMARY SOURCE TEXT STUDY
It can be rare to find time in our week or an environment for focused Torah text study.  Many communities engage in the practice of learning 'Pirkei Avot' shabbat afternoons. In this text study, we will be learning from 'The Illustrated Pirkei Avot,' which is a complete English translation of this mishna, accompanied by over 100 pages of illustrations. This session will be simply accessible for those at the very beginning of their Jewish text study journey, and a fun new approach to text study for those deep in their journey.

FOOD AND IDENTITY: THE CHANGING FACE OF ISRAELI CUISINE
Cooking has been the focus of Yael’s life. When she left Israel to study in the UK, it dawned on her how important good food is and how it can lift your spirits as well as being central to home life and ritual. Yael will discuss Israeli food – a combination of Jewish, Mediterranean, Palestinian and North African cuisine – and its reflection of our identity.

MELAVA MALKA MANTRA LAB (1)
Mantra meditation has been a practice I have been exploring the past three years for my own self centering tool. As someone who appreciates actually being able to see progress, and a process, this past year I began writing mantras. In the first session of this two-part series we will learn about the basics of throwing your own melava malka (there are like three rules, super easy), and gain support to start the new week strong! Join me motzei Shabbat in having a go at making your own!

MELAVA MALKA MANTRA LAB (2)
After shabbat, during the time where we escort the queen, is a powerful time to reflect on the insights we gained from the day and set intentions for the week ahead. The second part of this series puts the theory into practice; have a go at throwing your own melava malka and gain support to start the new week strong! (Don't worry if you missed the first part and want to join, there are like three rules, super easy)

ZIKHARON: SONGMAKERS AUSTRALIA IN RECITAL
We at Songmakers Australia are very committed to the development of young singers and pianists in our line of interest, Art song and we appreciate the opportunity to pass on the narrative and the stories of our songs to the LIMMUD NZ audience. This programme, called Zikharon (remembering) focuses on the oeuvre of Jewish composers from the Holocaust. Unknown, forgotten or “degenerate” these composers pluck the strings of our collective memory and speak directly to our hearts. To compliment the emotional load the programme also includes songs by famous European composers (Liszt, Ravel) who have either elaborated Jewish melodies or complete the intellectual message of the programme. Click here for a more detailed description of the performers and their performance!

COMIC MISHNA MAKING
While working on The Illustrated Pirkei Avot, I developed a system for crafting together my translation of the text and choosing meaningful commentary to create a relevant version of this mishna. Each participant will be given a mishna with several commentaries, and translations. Together we will create our own new illustrated mishna. Zero art or mishna making experience required.

THE ILLUSTRATED ETHICS OF LIMMUD NZ
Learn about the process the sages took in developing mishna (teachings & law), and engage in this creative process of responding to the needs of your current times. We will discuss the different approaches the sages took in selecting their advice to create Pirkei Avot and explore the possibilities of what may have informed their decision. Through the mishna making process we will create our own new Jewish text to help navigate our communities in 2018. The complete project will be available for participants to print and assemble at home after the conference.
