Wally Hirsh

After completing two degrees at Victoria University, Wally Hirsh had a full career in the educator sector. In 1985 he was appointed New Zealand's Race Relations Conciliator and a Human Rights Commissioner, a position he held until 1990 when he became a consultant in Ethnic Affairs. With four years as Head of Department at Auckland University of Technology, and then three has principal of Kadimah College (as it then was), Wally has completed a long career in education and human rights. He was a Fulbright Scholar, guest lecturer at Oxford University and the Marjory Smart Fellow at Melbourne University. He is the author and editor of several books. Wally also leads a very active life in the Jewish community and was the foundation chairman of the New Zealand Jewish Council. He was awarded an OBE for services to race relations and the community in 1990, and appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1993. Now retired, he lives in Auckland with his wife Adele. They have three adult children and seven grandchildren.
